Who can join FERN?
Anyone with a desire to assist in forest-related research, education, and management is invited to join FERN. Whether you are an experienced professional or just beginning to recognize the importance of trees in our rural and urban landscapes, you are welcomed to sign up and receive the monthly FERN e-newsletter. Current members include woodland owners, the general public, forestry professionals, urban forest enthusiasts, naturalists, scientific researchers and outreach specialists.
For example:
Are you a woodland owner?
If you have woodlands that can be used for research and education, areas where trees can be planted, and a willingness to participate, FERN needs you. Woodland owners that are engaged or beginning woodland management activities and who want to become involved in helping to improve their woodlands and regional forests are encouraged to join. FERN’s monthly e-newsletters are a way to engage with researchers on important forest-health related projects and to stay on top of announcements about scientific findings and educational opportunities.
Are you a land manager?
If so, FERN may be a good way to learn about potential research and educational programs for your organization work with. FERN’s news updates will also provide an outlet to learn more about what is happening in the area’s woodlands and forests. In addition, if you have ideas of projects that would be good fits for your group, propose them to us! (Link to “Have an idea?” section)
Are you a city resident?
You can be an important asset in building a healthier urban forest. FERN will provide information about forest health volunteer and educational opportunities in cities as well as in rural areas, woodlands and forests. As urban areas expand, in Kentucky and throughout the country, it is increasingly important that we assess the health of our urban trees and support management for healthy and sustainable urban forests.
Are you a schoolteacher or an environmental educator?
FERN will provide information about citizen science and educational activities that may be good opportunities for your students. In addition, if you have ideas of projects that would be good fits for your group, propose them to us by clicking here!
