Backyard Beetle Program
- Bark beetles are an important part of our forested ecosystem. There are many different species of bark beetles and, while most are harmless, some can hurt and kill trees, either directly or through the diseases they carry. To better understand what bark beetles are present in this area, researchers at UK are partnering with University of Georgia and University of Florida in a region-wide citizen science bark beetle sampling program and we want your help!
- We want volunteer to sample bark beetles in their backyard/woodland using basic supplies you probably have sitting around your house: a 2-liter bottle, hand sanitizer, ziptop bags, and a willingness to mail your collected samples in (or just bring them to Dr. Ellen Crocker at the UK campus). Your samples will be professionally identified and your results added to a nation-wide database.
